GERS WANT SFA REVIEW
BY GAVIN BERRY RANGERS are demanding answers from the SFA over any involvement director Gary Hughes might have had in decisions taken against the club during his time as a board member.
And the Light Blues have called on Hampden chiefs to immediately review procedures when making appointments for independent posts.
Hughes decided against standing for re-election as a non-executive Hampden director at today’s AGM after the storm following Record Sport’s exclusive which revealed his slur against Rangers fans in an interview 12 years ago.
Self-confessed Celtic fan Hughes, appointed to the eight-man SFA board in April 2015, referred to Gers followers as “the great unwashed” and has now effectively quit his post after Ibrox chairman Dave King called for an investigation.
Now Rangers want to know if Hughes was involved in any decisions that could have impacted on them, particularly last month’s notice of complaint over the award of their 2011 UEFA licence, which they have described as “ridiculous”.
A Rangers spokesperson said: “Rangers notes that Gary Hughes will not be standing again for the SFA’s Board. Hopefully this decision augurs well for the SFA under the stewardship of its new Chief Executive Officer.
“However, Rangers will be seeking a review of the SFA’s procedures for such appointments because it is vitally important that those who do stand for election to independent posts in particular are indeed truly independent.
“Rangers shall also be asking the SFA to review whether Mr Hughes was party to any discussions regarding the ridiculous Notice of Complaint brought against the club.
“Furthermore, Rangers must be assured that no actions taken by Mr Hughes during the period of his appointment could have impacted negatively on our club.”
