FATAL CRASH SCENE ‘LIKE A BATTLEFIELD’ Accidents on A-roads leave man and woman dead and others badly hurt
TWO people died in horror road crashes at the weekend and several others were injured.
A horror pile-up on the A75 Gretna to Stranraer road left a man dead and a woman seriously injured.
Several dogs are also thought to have died in the crash on Saturday.
The accident happened at 2.45am on the Creetown bypass, near Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire. The road was shut for 22 hours.
It involved a Scania articulated lorry, a Ford Ranger pick-up towing a trailer with dogs and two other cars.
The male pick-up driver died at the scene and a 43-year-old woman, who was in a silver Suzuki Swift, was seriously hurt.
Firefighters had to use specialist cutting equipment at the scene.
A man who lives near the road said: “I was awakened by a huge bang. I didn’t know what it was at first and then I heard the emergency vehicles going past.”
Another local said: “As daylight came, it was a scene more like a battlefield. There seemed to be vehicles everywhere, including ambulances, police and fire engines.”
There was also a major alert because of fears of fuel contamination to the River Cree and bays around the Solway Firth.
Dumfries and Galloway Council said: “As a result of risk to human health from chemical contamination, the council have temporarily closed to food business operators the production of shellfish from Fleet Bay and Wigtown Bay.”
In the second accident, a woman, 50, died after a Ford Fusion and a Ford Ranger crashed on the A77 at Garleffin Wood, near Ballantrae, Ayrshire, on Saturday at 2.40pm.
She was a passenger in the Fusion. The male driver, 63, was in a critical condition last night.
The four occupants of the Ranger were treated for minor injuries.
Police are appealing for information.
