DEMAND LEAVES KIDS DISAPPOINTED Toy firm’s summer offer causes massive queues around country
A SPECIAL offer at Build-A-Bear Workshop descended into chaos after families queued for seven hours for bargain toys – and some were turned away at the door.
Parents packed out shopping centres in a bid to get their hands on a teddy priced at the age of their child.
But children were left disappointed after the “Pay Your Age” event couldn’t cope with demand.
Shoppers started arriving for their bears at 6am. By 11am, some were being turned away.
Queues snaked around shopping malls, including the Centre in Livingston and Glasgow’s Silverburn, Braehead and Buchanan Galleries. More than 1000 people queued at Build-A-Bear at Edinburgh’s Ocean Terminal.
Many parents said their BY SAMANTHA CROAL children were gutted after being turned away without a toy. Dad Robert Kelly said: “On the way home from Build-A-Bear with a very disappointed child. They’ve closed the queue, so don’t head in.” Customers said those being turned away were issued with £12 off vouchers. Peter Beagley, regional centre director with responsibility for intu Braehead said: “The Build-A-Bear, event has prompted unprecedented demand from customers.” A Build-A-Bear spokesman added: “The crowds have greatly exceeded our expectations and, per local authorities, queues are at capacity and we cannot accept additional guests due to safety concerns.”
