Jody played in Scotland and spoke highly of it so it was a no-brainer

-

A FACE-TO-FACE chat with Chelsea legend Jody Morris was enough to convince Max Lowe he’d be in the right hands at Aberdeen.

The 21-year-old left-back’s move from Derby on loan until January was rubber-stamped with the reassurance of Morris that Dons boss Derek McInnes was the man to help develop the youngster’s career.

The ex-England Under-20 international has fallen down the pecking order under new Rams gaffer Frank Lampard but he’s been told he still has a future with the Championship club and needs game time.

McInnes and Lampard have been discussing the player’s future for several weeks with the former England star speaking highly of the defender.

And Morris, McInnes’s team-mate at Millwall and BY FRANK GILFEATHER taken to St Johnstone when the Reds boss was in charge there, told Lowe a spell with his pal would make him a better player, just like James Maddison and Danny Ward.

Lowe said: “Frank Lampard knows what I’m about so hopefully I can go back there and do well.

“He told me about Aberdeen as a club and the opportunity it is to play in the Scottish league. I was on board with it and wanted to go straight away.

“Jody’s played in Scotland and had a great career as well as the gaffer. That Jody’s played in the top league in Scotland and spoke highly of it made it a no-brainer for me.”

A product of Derby’s youth academy, Lowe came off the bench in the 4-0 League Cup win at Hull on Tuesday and could face Kilmarnock at Pittodrie tomorrow.

But he accepts that Andy Considine, who has held the Dons left-back position for seasons, will be tough to shift.

He said: “The deal was sorted after the Hull game. I flew up, had a medical and trained with my new team-mates on Thursday morning.

“It’s a really strong squad. There’s healthy competition in every position. Whenever I get my opportunity hopefully I can take it but I’ll be willing to wait for that chance.

“Frank Lampard has been fantastic with me. The first day of pre-season, when he talked you listened. He’s intelligent and he’s been really good with the young lads.

“And as soon as Aberdeen were interested he only spoke positive things about Derek McInnes and the size of the club.

“I’m 21 so I’m at that age where I need to get games under my belt. I’m always willing to learn and hopefully I can play as many games as I can up until January then we’ll see what happens after that.

“The Premier League is my target. It’s is on my to-do list.”

McInnes revealed he has finished his business for this transfer window, which closes tonight, and downplayed reports he was on the trail of Ryan Gauld.

He insists Lowe was his main target and he had been tracking him for some time as he continues to need skipper Graeme Shinnie, signed as a left-back from Inverness, as the mainstay of his midfield.

McInnes said: “Max is the one we’d identified through the close season. The new manager at Derby wanted to assess the squad and he’d made a big impression on Frank and Jody.

“Left-back is a position we’ve been looking to fill, an attacking wing-back role. It allows Shinnie to stay in the middle of the park where he and I think he’s more effective.”
