MILLER COULD DEE–LIVER THE CUTTING EDGE

-

BY EUAN McARTHUR STEVEN MILNE insists Dundee must show a ruthless streak if they’re to win at Ibrox for the first time since 2001.

And he reckons Rangers old boy Kenny Miller could provide the killer touch they’ve been sorely lacking.

It was Milne who headed the clincher when the Dark Blues last tasted victory in Govan, heading home to seal a 2-0 triumph.

Dundee now head back to Glasgow tomorrow in desperate need of a result after losing their first four games of the Premiership campaign.

Former striker Milne, who’ll never forget that joyous evening 17 years ago, believes Neil McCann’s strugglers have to develop a clinical edge.

But he wouldn’t be surprised if new signing Miller provided the finishing touch as he returns to Ibrox for the first time since his acrimonious summer departure.

Milne said: “You need to have a bit of composure on the ball but perhaps more importantly you need to be clinical when chances come your way.

“That’s what Dundee have possibly been lacking so far this season. I went to their 3-1 defeat against Motherwell recently.

“They did have chances that day and didn’t take them which they were punished for.

“Chances are few and far between when you go to Glasgow so you must take them. It comes back to the composure thing, playing in a big arena.

“Kenny has played at the highest level for both club and country.

“He’s one who has composure and ability. You would fancy him to take a chance.

“Hopefully that is the case on Saturday because Dundee could certainly do with a boost.”

Milne’s memories of his exploits against Dick Advocaat’s Rangers in 2001 remain vivid – but he would love to see someone else assuming hero status. The 38-year-old said: “I only came on for the last five minutes or so. I’d been out for about two months with an ankle injury.

“It was uncharacteristic to score with a back-post header. It managed to just sneak over the line.

“I remember Claudio Caniggia running the show for us, especially in the first half when he got the first goal.

“It’s a great memory but it’s time for someone else to make a name for themselves at Dundee.”

Milne still has a soft spot for the Dark Blues and hopes they can get off the mark to put a smile back on their supporters’ faces.

He said: “I’ve been speaking to quite a lot of Dundee fans. They’ve been disappointed not just with results but performances.

“If they could get anything from this game it could push them on.

“I don’t see why they can’t go to Ibrox and think they can win. They do have players capable of causing Rangers problems.

“I would probably try to play the same sort of way, a passing game.

“But fans are probably getting frustrated by seeing moves break down at the back which then puts them under pressure.

“It’s going to be crucial not to lose an early goal. Confidence levels aren’t too high so they want to avoid another dent.

“With each game that goes by without getting at least a point, it does put more pressure on.

“There has to be a belief they can turn it round. There would be no better place to start than Ibrox.”
