Hugo holds on to Spurs armband

-

MAURICIO POChETTINO admits hugo Lloris was “lucky” his drink-driving shame did not cause a serious accident.

The Tottenham boss yesterday confirmed the World Cup winner will remain captain following his conviction this week.

That’s despite the Frenchman telling him he would understand if the armband was taken off him on top of being fined two weeks’ wages.

Lloris was surrounded by vomit and slurring his words when police pulled him over in his Porsche, a court heard on Wednesday. Tests showed he was more than twice the drink-drive limit.

At Westminster Magistrates Court, the 31-year-old admitted drink driving in August and was fined £50,000 plus banned from driving for 20 months.

Pochettino said: “he already knew in the moment it was a big mistake. Of course anyone can make a mistake. he was lucky there was no consequence. That is important. And of course now it is a massive lesson for him, a life lesson.”

The Argentine said Lloris, who will miss tomorrow’s visit of Liverpool with a thigh strain, “has the capacity to move on and to learn.”

Pochettino added: “Of course he is the first to regret about everything.

“he made a mistake and he’s suffered the punishment that the society demands. he has punished himself.

“We are not God, we can’t judge people. Only we need to try to ensure he understands it was a mistake.

“he said, ‘Gaffer it’s a massive lesson for me. I made a mistake and now I need to pay.’ Like a man that he is, he is going to accept everything.

“Will he remain as captain? Of course.” Albacete 2, Lugo 3; Numancia 1, Gijon 2; Elche 2, Granada 1; Las Palmas 1, Majadahonda 2. (7.45 unless stated) St Mirren v Celtic. Birmingham v West Brom. Cumbernauld Colts v Arniston.
