Super Scot Julie gets inducted in the Hall of Fame

-

BY ANTHONY HAGGERTY JULIE FLEETING is “thrilled” to be inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.

Fleeting will receive the accolade at this year’s annual dinner at Hampden on Sunday, October 21.

An outstanding striker and ambassador for the game, she is Scotland’s most prolific goalscorer with 116 international goals in 121 caps.

Fleeting captained the national team for eight years as her club career took her from Ayr to San Diego Spirit in 2002 – the first Scot to play in the professional WUSA league.

During her two-season spell in California, Fleeting was voted Most Valuable Player by her team-mates and received the Golden Boot award.

After a spell at Ross County, Fleeting became a key member of the all-conquering Arsenal side. Over eight years she scored more than 300 goals in the English top flight, winning the WSL, seven Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three Premier League Cups and the UEFA Cup. A return to Scotland took Fleeting first to Kilwinning, then Celtic and latterly 11-time champions Glasgow City.

Fleeting, who joins women’s football pioneer Rose Reilly in the Hall of Fame, said: “I’m thrilled. The list of great names in the Hall of Fame is incredible and it’s an honour to be joining them.

“Women’s football in Scotland is improving year by year as demonstrated by the national team reaching the World Cup finals.

“Hopefully the increased profile will inspire more women and girls to pursue the game we all love.”
