JIMMY Johnstone’s car number plate has been snapped up at an auction.

The registration J777 NKY once owned by Hoops legend Jinky sold for £2800.

The plate came complete with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) Retention Document and Number Plate Authorisation Certificate. It was sold at McTear’s auctionhouse in Glasgow yesterday.

Jinky passed away aged 61 in 2006 after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease five years earlier. The wing wizard scored 129 goals in 515 appearances for Celtic and picked up nine league winners’ medals as well as lifting the Scottish Cup four times and the League Cup five times.

Jinky also famously lifted the European Cup in 1967 and was voted Celtic’s best ever player by the club’s fans in 2002. James Bruce, from McTear’s, said: “Private number plates are big business in the UK but it is not often that one comes to auction with such a fascinating history.

“This is a very unusual piece of memorabilia and that was reflected in the price paid by a collector in England.”
