It came after the duchess had told how she wanted a daughter – and had even bought a special watch as an heirloom should she ever have one.

It is the first time 34-year-old Harry has made known his feelings about the sex of the royal baby since it was announced last week that his wife is pregnant.

The prince revealed his wishes at a cycle race he was attending in Sydney.

A fan called out: “Congratula­tions, I hope it’s a girl.” Harry replied: “So do I.” His words echo Meghan’s own wishes. In an interview the former actress had told how she got a £5000 Cartier Tank Francoise watch to celebrate the renewal TIGHT FIT Smugglers of TV series Suits for a third time. She said: “I had it engraved on the back, ‘To MM. From MM’, and I plan to give it to my daughter one day.

“That’s what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them.”

Harry’s comments about wanting a girl came during a day of high jinks in Sydney on the second day of his Invictus Games for injured service personnel.

The prince was chatting to ABC sports reporter Dylan Alcott when athlete Matt Model handed him a pair of skimpy swimming trunks, which he then put on.

Dylan, a triple Paralympic gold medallist in wheelchair tennis and basketball, said: “We gave him a gift. One of the athletes, Matt, gave him a pair of budgie smugglers. And he put them on, over his jeans. It looks awesome.

“He said, ‘Shall I put them on?’ We said, ‘100 per cent.’ So he put them on… Good on him.
