Met Office warning over ‘polar vortext’ winds

-

BY MICHAEL PRINGLE michael.pringle@reachplc.com that the next few months could be colder than normal due to hurricane strength winds in the earth’s stratosphere known as a “polar vortex”.

While temperatures will remain in the teens for most parts, they will eventually start to dip, with much colder weather expected across the country by Friday.

Northerly winds which could reach gale force in the north and north-east of Scotland will make it feel bitterly cold.

The strong winds will bring showery weather which will turn wintry in the far north. Overnight frosts on top of showers could result in icy conditions on roads.

Met Office forecaster Sarah Kent insists it’s time to look out “hats” and “woolly jumpers”.

She added: “There could be snow lying on high ground at the weekend.”
