PREGNANCY TEST SHOCK AT AGE OF 48

-

Dear Coleen

I’M a married woman of 48 and recently have been feeling like I’m pregnant. I ignored it for a while but then I did a test, which indicated I was. I’m finding it hard to believe at my age. We don’t use contraception, as I just assumed getting pregnant would be a million-to-one shot.

We already have two grown-up children aged 17 and 19 and had closed the door on having more a very long time ago.

I haven’t spoken to my husband yet and keep hoping the result is some kind of false positive. I can’t imagine he’d be happy – he’s 50 and we’re at a point in our lives where we finally have more time for us.

Coleen says

THE first thing you have to do is see your GP who can do a blood test to give a more accurate result, then you’ll have the opportunity to discuss the implications, including any potential risks to your or the baby’s health.

As far as your husband goes, you don’t know how he’ll react.

If you are pregnant, I’m sure he’ll be shocked but he’ll also want to support you – he did have something to do with it.

And, yes, you do have to carefully consider and talk about the impact that a young child could have on your lives, not just now, but in the future.

But don’t try to deal with this on your own – get support from your husband and your doctor and arm yourselves with the facts.

Good luck.
