DUFFY READY TO ROCK WITH SONS’ REVIVAL

PREMIERSHIP

-

JIM DUFFY admits he faces a tough job to revive Dumbarton – but he’s relishing the challenge after six months out of the game.

The former Morton boss takes over from Stephen Aitken who was sacked a fortnight ago after the Sons side slipped to second bottom in League One.

Assistant manager Ian Durrant, who has now left his role, took the side in the weekend’s 3-1 defeat at league leaders Arbroath.

But experienced Duffy – who’s also had spells at Falkirk, Dundee, Hibs, Norwich, Brechin and Clyde – believes he can change the fortunes of a team that’s managed just two wins in 10 games.

He said: “It is good to be back involved again and I’m looking forward to the game with East Fife.

“I have admired the work Stephen has done down here. Dumbarton were tough opponents when I was at Morton.

“Things have not gone his way this season. We’re in a disappointing position in the league and the first thing we have to do is try and improve it.”

Sons chairman John Steele is relieved to land his No.1 target who was BY JOHN GARDNER also recently linked with Partick Thistle, Airdrie and Queen’s Park.

Steele said: “We are chuffed to get Jim Duffy on board. His achievements as a manager, most recently having managed Morton to consecutive comfortable finishes in the Championship, made him the unanimous first choice of our board.

“He has been anxious to get back into football since leaving Morton at the end of last season and we are delighted to give him that opportunity.

“There are still three quarters of the season left and our target is still perfectly achievable.

“We know how much ground we have to make up but the scope is there to do it. We are certain we have the right manager to try to guide us to that.

“It is clear from the number of applications we received how attractive the role is to managers from across the spectrum.”

Durrant has left the post he took on in January 2017 with a club spokesperson saying: “Everyone at Dumbarton thanks Ian for his efforts and wishes him well for the future.”
