I GAVE FERGIE PELTERS OVER GONG

-

ARCHIE KNOX took his place in Scotland’s Hall of Fame and joked about the day he slaughtered old pal Sir Alex Ferguson about his OBE.

The coaching legend was inducted at Hampden after a glittering career working with some of the game’s elite.

Knox was Fergie’s right hand at Aberdeen and Old Trafford.

And when it came to Sir Alex getting his honour from the Queen his trusty No.2 said: “When Alex got his OBE I asked him if he knew what it stood for. He said, ‘Aye, it’s the Order of the British Empire’. I told him, ‘Naw, it’s for Other Buggers’ Efforts’.

“But this is an unbelievable honour, just fantastic. It’s up there with anything I have achieved, especially as I haven’t done anything for quite some time now and you look at the people in there with hundreds of caps and having done everything in football.

“When I go to coaching courses I’m asked what an assistant manager does. I tell them the clue is in the name. You help the manager. You will have your disagreements, as I did with all of them, but if there is a change you don’t agree with you accept it and get on with it.”

Knox eventually left Fergie’s side when the call came to join Smith at Rangers.

But it didn’t go down well with the Old Trafford boss. He said: “Alex wasn’t best pleased when I told him! But I had a wife and two kids so I did what was best for them.”
