Team try to find future for Michelin staff
THE team tasked with saving Michelin’s factory in Dundee were yesterday named by Economy Secretary Derek Mackay.
He announced that the city council, Scottish Enterprise and union bosses will join business experts to try to save the stricken plant.
The action group’s core of 16 members, who also include site manager John Reid, will meet for the first time on Monday.
The factory’s 845 employees were told earlier this week that the plant would close its doors within two years.
Mackay said: “The Scottish Government will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to find a viable and sustainable future for the plant and its highly skilled workforce.”
The news came as support continued to flood in for the workforce from their counterparts in Ballymena.
Michelin announced they were shutting their Northern Irish plant in 2015 and closed the doors a few weeks ago with the loss of 900 jobs.
On Facebook, Garry Brown wrote: “Best of luck to the Dundee workforce. I’d be surprised if these foreign plants with cheap labour have anywhere near the quality we achieved.”
Simon Taylor added: “No doubt the workers will get the same platitudes from their politicians as we did.”
