Teach all kids first aid, says boy who saved mum’s life

A BOY who saved his mother’s life after she collapsed is calling for first aid to be taught in all of Scotland’s primary schools.

Cayden Mcauley was with mum Lyndsey Baxter, who has chronic heart disease, when she fell unconscious walking to the shops in April 2016.

The six-year-old managed to sit her up and used his jacket to keep her warm before asking a passing cabbie to call an ambulance. Now eight, Cayden has trained in first aid and is backing a petition for this to be taught in all primaries.

He said: “With mum’s condition, it’s really important for me to know what to do if something happens to her. I feel a lot more confident having first aid skills.

“It’d be great if other children could learn too, so they can help others.” ● The petition can be found at: www. parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/ Petitions/firstaidprimaryschools smartenergyGB.org BY VIVIENNE AITKEN Health Editor AN ELDERLY man with a history of strokes has waited more than six months for an MRI scan on his enlarged heart.

And Edward McDougall, 74, was facing an even longer wait... until the Daily Record stepped in.

His doctor told him in April he needed the test to help diagnose his condition but widower Edward heard nothing until the Record spoke to NHS Lanarkshire.

They declined to discuss his case but referred him to their patient affairs team who got him booked in later this month.

Edward got in touch after the Record revealed the Audit Scotland report showing failures in NHS treatment times set by the Scottish Government.

He said he was scared to go out in case he fell ill.

The retired street light technician had his first stroke in February 2010 and five mini strokes since. He went to his GP on April 16 after feeling dizzy and breathless and was told he’d an swollen heart and needed a scan.

He said “He told me I should get an appointment in two to three months.

“I waited until July and contacted him. He said there were big waiting lists but every month since I just seem further from the top.”

Edward, who lives alone since his wife died of cancer three-and-a-half years ago,
