Heavy rainfall causes disruption
tOrreNtIAl downpours caused widespread flooding yesterday, sparking major disruption on roads and railways.
Parts of south-west Scotland were deluged with a fifth of the rain that’s usually expected during the whole of November.
More than an inch was measured at Threave Castle, Kirkcudbrightshire, and at Bishopton, Renfrewshire.
All services were suspended on the busy rail route between Glasgow and Aberdeen for most of the day, while flooding closed the line between Kilmarnock and Barrhead, Renfrewshire.
Traffic Scotland’s Twitter feed catalogued a spate of accidents on the roads and motorways, with big delays on the M80 near Stirling and the M8 in Glasgow.
Aberdeen University student Alex Boyes, 20, of Giffnock, near Glasgow, said train cancellations BY PAUL DRURY caused scenes of “chaos” at Glasgow Queen Street station.
She added: “There was an announcement saying it was due to flooding. Later that changed to a ‘signalling fault’.”
Ten services were affected on the Glasgow to Falkirk Grahamston and Cumbernauld routes, while the Kilmarnock flooding also affected trains from Newcastle and Stranraer.
ScotRail said the Aberdeen and Falkirk disruption was caused by a signalling fault and replacement buses operated between Glasgow and Stirling.
Some CalMac ferry services from Oban were called off due to “adverse weather”.
Bonnie Diamond, of the Met Office, said: “The south-west has borne the brunt of the weather, though Glasgow’s rainfall total suggests it was none to pleasant here either.”
