People’s vote plan
IT SEEMS the UK Parliament, with its majority of Remainers, could take control of Brexit.
Those MPs who plan to vote against Theresa May’s plan and who represent constituencies that voted to leave are ignoring the democratic process.
These MPs should consider abstaining in Tuesday vote or, if they really want to vote against it, they should resign their seat and force a by-election.
If a sufficient number of MPs resign, the Government could decide to postpone the vote pending the by-elections, which would either give those MPs a mandate to vote against the Prime Minister or give voters a chance to elect a new MP who represents their view.
In a way, this would be a people’s vote in the affected constituencies. Peter, Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire
More soft justice
I READ the story in Thursday’s Record about the shopkeeper who was robbed and stabbed in the neck twice.
Once again the sentence given to his attacker – 25 months – is indicative of the punishment handed out by our courts.
The perpetrator will be unlucky if he serves a year. Is this just normality in Scotland?
There was more uproar when Trump visited Scotland than criticism of our outdated and ineffective legal system. Charles Lindsay, Cumbernauld
