California may hog the limelight when it comes to American wine, yet it was first produced on the east coast and New York state currently has more than 1600 vineyards and 400 wineries.

We visited the excellent Millbrook Winery in Stanford and the more rustic, hipster Palaia Vineyard in Highland Mills.

For culture vultures who perhaps aren’t as keen on getting a full-on fix of retail therapy, New York state has plenty to offer. Art buffs or not, it would be difficult for anyone not to marvel at the 500-acre outdoor museum, Storm King Art Centre, where vast parkland is punctuated by artists’ sculptures and exhibition­s, a unique, attractive blend of man-made works and natural creations.

You’ll be equally fascinated by the history at your fingertips courtesy of the Franklin D Roosevelt home, library and museum in Hyde Park.

The legendary former president’s home is immaculate­ly preserved, while a whole afternoon could easily whizz by as you pore over artefacts and memoirs documentin­g his illustriou­s tenure at the White House, through the Great Depression and World War II.

Meanwhile, a lazy afternoon can be spent ambling around the quaint towns of Beacon or Rhinebeck, a far cry from the madding crowds of downtown Manhattan.

Yet for those who can’t resist a trip to the Big Apple, it’s only a short ride away from Stewart Internatio­nal Airport – shuttle busses are timed to meet passengers off the Edinburgh flight and transfer you to Times Square in just 90 minutes.

Norwegian Airlines’ service gives you the option to build a trip in which you take in the bright lights of NYC, before winding down and sampling some of the delightful Upstate region.

But you’ll need to be quick. Norwegian Airlines recently announced the cancellati­on of their Edinburgh-Stewart Airport flights, as of March next year.
