WAT A TROOPER

Keith can do a job anywhere in County side

- IAN ORR

KEITH WATSON has proved he’s the man for a crisis at Ross County and he’s loving every minute of it.

Watson has stepped up to solve defensive headaches in Dingwall with Callum Morris, Liam Fontaine and Sean Kelly all sidelined by injury.

The summer signing from St Johnstone is also embracing the role of mentor to young stopper Tom Grivosti and still had time to claim the lastgasp winning goal at Alloa.

Grivosti, 19, is likely to be paired with former St Johnstone stalwart Watson again today against Queen of the South.

And Watson said: “It has been a challenging spell given all the injuries in defence but I have enjoyed it.

“I’ve played right-back, right centre-half and left centre-half but I’m happy as long as I’m doing a job for the team.

“With young Grivo coming in for his first league start at the weekend, you could see it as extra responsibility.

“However, I thought he was excellent.

“The boy did everything simply, passed well and defended well.

“I was delighted for him, especially with him helping us come away with a clean sheet too. That will give him a lot of confidence if he is needed again.

“Communication is massive as a defender but when we are playing I do as much as I can to help him. I speak to him before the game and put things in his mind but he knows what it’s all about.

“He deserves his chance. We’ve got a lot of big players missing but he has come in and shown he’s capable of doing a job for us.”

County know Queen of the South have the ability to make it difficult today.

Watson is confident his late winner at Alloa last week proved County’s resilience in a tight spot.

He said: “The boys are just buzzing that we got there in the end.

“Alloa defended well and their keeper made a few good saves. It was a difficult game but we got there.”

Queen of the South boss Gary Naysmith says second placed County deserve credit as big budgets do not always guarantee success.

He said: “It is a very tough game for us against a team that are delivering on the expectations placed on them at the start of the season.

“Their management and players deserve credit.

“They may have the biggest budget on paper but the Championship is about winning games on the pitch.”
