BY IAIN MACFARLANE doubt that if the defender keeps progressing his value and stock will only rise.

Sadly for the Hoops they will need to make the most of Benkovic’s season-long loan spell as he’s now too dear for their pockets but he will have a huge say in the success of their season if he maintains his current form.

Benkovic has been solid at the back and oozes class on the ball but he also provides a goal threat and he was gutted that he didn’t double his personal Celtic tally with a vital strike at Fir Park. With the Bhoys already a goal ahead thanks to Ryan Christie’s finish, Benkovic thought he’d added to the lead only to have the goal chalked off for a foul on Tom Aldred. That decision left Benkovic stunned – and his mood didn’t improve when Motherwell grabbed a late equaliser through Danny Johnson. Benkovic said: “I was shocked my goal wasn’t allowed. I didn’t understand what happened. From my side I think everything was clear.

“I didn’t touch their player but sometimes the ref whistles what he sees.

“I asked him why but he said it was his decision and that was that. I still don’t understand but what can I do?

“I was disappointed with the result against Motherwell because we had the opportunity to go top of the table.

“We had some bad luck during the game but now we must focus on the next one.

“I disagree that we threw the game away. We gave everything. We knew how important it was like every game for Celtic.”
