Dialysis link to long-term brain injury
KIDNEY dialysis may be associated with progressive brain injury in those who are treated for many years, according to research.
Glasgow University scientists found the process can cause shortterm “cerebral stunning”.
They found blood flow to the brain reduced during dialysis and cognitive function decreased too.
University professor Patrick Mark said: “Crucially, we found that while patients both on short and long-term dialysis had some form of cognitive impairment, patients who went on to receive a transplant saw an improvement in their memory.”
