I’d love to pick up baton from Andy

-

LAURA MUIR insists she’s ready to pick up the baton from Sir Andy Murray – to ensure there is still a Scot riding high as world No.1.

The European 1500 metres champ springs into relay action for GB&NI in today’s Simplyhealth Great Stirling cross-country.

Muir, 25, has set her sights on staying in top spot in the rankings with March’s Euro Indoors in Glasgow on her target list.

But she admits she might need to match Murray’s haul of two Olympic golds to consider herself in the same league as the tennis star who has announced his impending retirement.

Muir said: “If you would give me the baton I would graciously accept that. But Andy has done a lot of special things. He keeps his crown for the time being. But he has done so much for his sport and can continue to do that.

“Hopefully the rest of us can take on what he has done for

She said: “I’d always watch Wimbledon. I saw him at the Davis Cup in Glasgow a few years ago. Then I watched him at the Olympics in London and Rio.

“I think I shared a lift with him and I was still a bit starstruck at that point so I didn’t say anything.”

Muir will bid to make it two wins out of two in 2019 this afternoon by leading the home charge against the US and Europe

“It’s such a shame it’s not on his terms, it’s from his body not holding up.

“As a sportsperson, that’s the worst thing that can happen but he has done so much.”
