ROYAL EXPERT ON LETTER MEGHAN SENT TO HER FATHER
RUSSELL MYERS
THE whole sorry Markle debacle has now surely reached the end of the line. The final nail in the coffin of the fractured relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and her father – but how many times have we heard that?
On the face of it, the revelations in Meghan’s letter make it clear how heartbroken she is after such huge embarrassment heaped on her by her dad, Thomas.
For his part, he says he decided to reveal the letter – despite insisting on multiple previous occasions that he’d had no word from Meghan since her wedding – after her friends launched an “attack” on him last week.
Meghan is said to have sanctioned a puff piece from five pals who spoke to a US magazine to “fight her corner”. But in between them making her sound like a cross between Mother Theresa and Mary Poppins, as well as angering Palace press officers kept in the dark until it was in print, the added catastrophe is it is now clear Thomas has no intention of respecting her wishes.
It’s fair to suggest Meghan must have known, deep down, her letter would be published – perhaps why she chose to reproduce huge passages of her previous note.
However, interested you may or may not be in the whole affair, it should not be forgotten that beyond the headlines, this is a tragic tale of the loss of trust and love between a daughter and her father and, regardless of who shouts the loudest, there will be no winners. please, if you could help me more not as a bargaining chip for my loyalty’.”
The Duchess adds: “If you love me, as you tell the press you do, please stop. Please allow us to live our lives in peace.”
In response, Markle said: “Meghan’s given me cash gifts occasionally, but I never begged or asked. It was a couple of grand here or there.”
He is also angry about the Duchess’s claims he made money out of her.
“I’ve only accepted a few payments,” he said. “If I’d taken all the offers I’ve had, I could have made $600,000. I haven’t done that.” The Duchess goes on to scold her father for failing to tell her he would not walk her down the aisle at Windsor Castle.
He suffered a heart attack days before, leaving him hospital-bound amid revelations he cashed in on staged pictures with the paparazzi.
It led Prince Charles to step in at the last minute. She writes: “You’ve told the press that you called me to say you weren’t coming to the wedding – that didn’t happen because you never called.”
But Markle claims he both called and texted “as soon as I knew”. He believes Harry helped his wife write the letter because it describes him as being down a “rabbit hole”.
Royal expert Seward agreed. “I feel the hand of Harry on this,” she said. “If you look back at the history of Harry and Meghan, he clearly is very angry. She wouldn’t do it without his collaboration.”
Father-to-be Prince Harry made his first public appearance since Meghan’s letter was revealed at Twickenham yesterday to see England beat France 44-8 in the Six Nations.
Kensington Palace had no comment.
