-

BY STEPHEN STEWART and KIRSTEN McSTAY A SCHOOLGIRL was fighting for her life last night after she was hit by a car.

Police and ambulance teams rushed to the scene at The Loaning in Motherwell after the alarm was raised at 4.15pm yesterday.

The 12-year-old girl was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where her condition was described as “critical”.

There was a large police presence at the accident scene last night as the road remained cordoned off with officers standing guard.

A police spokeswoman said: “At about 4.15pm on Tuesday, February 12, police were called to reports of a young girl, aged 12, being struck by a vehicle at The Loaning in Motherwell.

“Emergency services attended and the girl was taken by ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where medical staff have described her condition as critical. “Inquiries are ongoing.” Last night, residents expressed their shock about the incident.

One woman said: “I can’t believe this has happened right on my doorstep. I hope she is OK.”

Another resident said: “We didn’t know what was happening but saw a helicopter landing in a field nearby our homes.”

Police confirmed an air ambulance was called to the scene.

But they said the girl ended up being transported to hospital by road instead.
