Brave hounds are credit to their owners

Dogs help war heroes with benefit chaos

SCOTTISH superdogs have helped veterans cope with Universal Credit chaos.

SNP Veterans Minister Graeme Dey paid tribute to the lifesaving work of Bravehound companion dogs who help former service personnel with the hidden wounds of trauma.

He visited the charity’s HQ in Erskine, Renfrewshire, just days after he slated benefits chiefs – revealing many ex-military personnel were so stressed by the benefits shake-up, they have thought about ending their lives.

Dey said: “It was a real pleasure to be able to visit Bravehound. By providing and supporting veterans with companion dogs, Bravehound are helping to make a lasting difference to their mental and physical wellbeing.”

Bravehound founder Fiona MacDonald said: “Bravehound has supported veterans through assessments and reassessments they are subjected to secure the welfare support they are entitled to receive.

“The forced move on to Universal Credit has been devastating for some – as it seems to mean, in most cases, a huge and unexplained cut in support.

“Universal credit is nightmarish to navigate. We have had to accompany veterans to assessments and provide financial assistance to appease landlords while appeals are scheduled.”

The Department for Work and Pensions said: “Universal Credit provides veterans and their families with specialised support.

“There is an armed forces champion in every district and job centre.”
