I’LL WIN FAIR AND SQUARE AT THE HYDRO

MVG is hungry for glory and lorne sausage as he heads for battle in Glasgow

- BY CRAIG SWAN

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN will power up for the Hydro on square sausage.

The world No.1 heads to Glasgow tomorrow for night two of the Premier League as the headline act.

Van Gerwen is relishing a return to Scotland for the darts and for a Scots delicacy.

The Dutch star will get a rare treat on his travels as he munches lorne sausage before attempting to butcher opponent Mensur Suljovic in front of 10,000 fans.

Van Gerwen said: “I love coming to Scotland for the square sausage.

“Maybe I have that every time and that makes me win, who knows?

“I always love coming to Glasgow to be fair, it’s always a good noisy crowd. They love their darts.”

Van Gerwen is set to put on another show for the Scottish supporters as he looks to maintain his staggering run in the tournament.

The world champion has topped the sectional phase of the Premier League for the past six years and hopes to rack up a magnificent seven before going to London for the shootout in May.

The unavailability of Gary Anderson due to injury has taken some of the gloss off for the local punters.

However, van Gerwen is certain to light it up in the absence of the Flying Scotsman.

He said: “This has been my tournament, six years in succession I have finished top of the table and in six finals.

“I have a phenomenal record but I also love this tournament. It’s great to perform week after week for the big crowds. It’s unfortunate for the tournament that Gary is out.

“Everyone says give the title to Michael but that is wrong.

“Michael Smith is still there, Raymond van Barneveld, Peter Wright, Rob Cross. There’s always going to be someone who pops up who you don’t expect.”

Van Gerwen made the ideal start with a success over Smith on night one.

The Dutch destroyer was always in control of his world final rematch in Newcastle and made his customary winning start to the event.

Suljovic is looking for a first victory having been held by wild-card Chris Dobey on Tyneside. But van Gerwen is heavy favourite to get the job

done and make it two wins out of two having also hit a nine-darter and won a Pro Tour Championship in Wigan at the weekend.

He savoured the triumph over Smith six days ago and said: “Michael had a 150 finish and can be a phenomenal player. You have to play well to beat him.

“To win the last leg – an 11-darter – was really nice.

“It could be the next big rivalry. Maybe he needs a few more lessons up here in the head and he will be all right.”
