I made cup history in 2016..now it’s time to make some more

It’s fantastic hearing those stories but it would be nice to create more history DAVID GRAY

DAVID GRAY says there’s barely a week goes by when he doesn’t get a Hibs fan eager to talk about his Scottish Cup winning goal.

Now the Easter Road skipper wants to give the punters a reason to change the subject by delivering more glory.

It’s been three years since Gray and his mates ended the club’s 114-year wait to lift the famous trophy but even now he’s hounded by happy fans who want to relive the moment.

But the thing about success is it’s addictive so Gray is determined not to rest on his laurels and make 2016 his only moment to savour when he hangs up his boots.

If they can get past defending champions Celtic on Saturday to book a place in the semifinals he’ll strongly fancy his chances of lifting the trophy again come May.

He said: “It has changed my life, definitely. Everyone involved that day is the same.

“I don’t think it will be until we finish our career and look back at what we’ve achieved that it will sink in.

“When people meet me the Cup is what they want to talk about. It’s great when you hear stories about people saying they’ve been to every final or BY EUAN McLEAN they’ve been with their dad who’s 85 and they never thought they’d see it.

“It puts it into perspective. Not long after the Final I went away with family to Majorca. I was pushing the pram along the front and this guy came over to say he was at the game. It was a bit surreal.

“Then we went to Dubai in January for the winter break and there were fans out there.

“There’s no escaping them, it’s fantastic hearing those stories, but it would be nice to create more history.

“At the start of every season we see the Cup as something

we can win and it’s how we have to address it.

“Our home record has been good against Celtic. They’re a very good team and we know every single player needs to be on the top of their game to get a result.”

Meanwhile, Robbie Stockdale is aiming to help script a blockbuster ending to the season for Hibs after admitting he was a reluctant Netflix star.

The Easter Road assistant was a first-team coach during a fly-on-the-wall documentary that covered Sunderland’s devastating relegation to League One last season.

The former Scotland stopper even took charge of the club for a third time as caretaker in a 3-0 victory over champions Wolves on the final day of the campaign before departing the Stadium of Light following Jack Ross’s appointment as boss.

Stockdale said: “I’ve been in football for over 20 years and in the last six months I’ve been recognised more from being on TV rather than doing all the right things for 20-odd years.

“You got used to the filming although in the first month, it felt a little bit intrusive but you start to build a relationship with the guys filming.

“Netflix went into it thinking it could be a really good story of us getting promoted back to the Premier League – but it was probably an even better story for them we got relegated.

“I haven’t watched it. People have and they’ve told me what it’s all about. It was hard enough living it.”
