Knife thug is nephew of notorious criminal Gordon Modiak
A THUG who slashed the throat of his ex-lover’s new partner is the nephew of the man behind a notorious acid attack. Gary Modiak scarred Peter Moyes for life with a Stanley knife in a pub. His uncle Gordon ordered the acid attack on former wife Louise Duddy in 1991.
A SLASHING victim scarred for life by his partner’s jealous ex has revealed the extent of his horrific injuries.
Peter Moyes shared the photos exclusively with the Daily Record as it emerged that the thug who attacked him is the nephew of the man behind Britain’s most notorious acid attack.
Gary Modiak was consumed with jealousy when he found out that his former girlfriend of 16 years, Lynne McGarry, was seeing Peter.
The 25-year-old office worker was left for dead after Modiak, 41, attacked him with a Stanley knife in an Edinburgh pub.
The slashing in July last year took place 27 years after another sickening attack in the city involving Modiak’s uncle. Gordon Modiak hired a hitman to throw concentrated sulphuric acid into the face of his former wife Louise Duddy in 1991.
The attack on Louise, who was left permanently blinded, was one of the first high-profile acid attacks in the UK.
Peter needed emergency surgery and 10 pints of blood to save his life after last summer’s terrifying assault at The Mousetrap pub in Leith.
Modiak pled guilty to a charge of attempted murder and was jailed last week for seven-and-ahalf years.
The shocking attack took place when he turned nasty after learning
online that his former girlfriend was seeing Peter.
Until then, the break-up had been amicable. But Modiak became abusive and threatening and said he was going to destroy her new relationship.
Peter’s dad, who was also called Peter, was stabbed to death in a horrific knife attack outside another Leith pub in 2004.
Just weeks before he carried out his threats, Modiak warned Peter: “See what happened to your dad, you are going to get 10 times worse.”
He continued to goad the financial services worker with comments about his late father.
On the night of the attack, Peter was in The Mousetrap with a friend when Modiak entered the pub with another man. He launched an unprovoked and sustained assault on the terrified victim before walking out and leaving him in a pool of blood.
The court heard the victim suffered “substantial” wounds to both sides of his neck and needed emergency surgery and blood transfusions.
Peter, who was off work for four months after the attack, also had nerve damage to parts of his face.
Prosecutor Eoghainn MacLean said: “Had he not received such immediate medical attention, his life would have been at risk.
“Only good fortune prevented more serious injury.”
The court heard Peter is now “highly self-conscious” and “less confident” and is affected by stress, anxiety and depression.
He will need further plastic surgery for his multiple injuries and therapy to help him cope with the aftermath of the trauma.
Sentencing Modiak at the High Court in Glasgow last week, judge Lord Arthurson revealed that he has a long criminal record.
He was jailed for three years in 2003 for assaulting and severely injuring another victim and was banged up for 11 months in 2009 for drugs offences.
Lord Arthurson told him: “This attack was unprovoked, sustained and murderous in its nature.”
