Grandad rakes in £250,000 as he becomes first Scot to win lottery’s new jackpot

A GRANDAD has become the first Scot to scoop a lottery’s new jackpot – walking away with £250,000.

Plumber Grainger Whitson, 74, says he’s now planning to down tools and enjoy his fortune after winning the Scottish Health Lottery Mega Raffle on March 1.

Top of the list for the doting grandad, of Carluke, Lanarkshir­e, is splashing out on a family holiday.

Grainger said: “It really is a fantastic result. I’m a wee bit overawed right now.

“I’ve been playing the Health Lottery for a few years and have won tens and twenties here and there but to get something like this is just phenomenal.

“I’ve been in the plumbing and heating business most of my life and I’d like to think that now I can take a wee step back.

“I have a nice family I would like to help in many ways. What a change it can make to everyone’s lives. It’s unbelievab­le.”

Health Lottery Scotland has raised £10million to back 296 charities and community projects.

Grainger said: “I support the Health Lottery, as my daughter has worked for the NHS all her life and I like to see the money going back into my community to help with health issues.”

Daughter Kim Cashmore added: “I’m so proud of my dad. This is a dream come true.”

Martin Ellice, of the Health Lottery, said: “We launched the Mega Raffle in August and are delighted to crown our first Scots winner. Grainger is such a lovely, hard-working man. We wish him and his family all the very best.”
