DANNY’S NEW BUDDIES GOAL

- BY ANTHONY HAGGERTY

DANNY MULLEN hit the ground running with two goals on the opening day of the season in a 2-1 win over Dundee.

Then the St Mirren striker hit the buffers.

Hand and ankle injuries meant Mullen spent periods on the sidelines during his debut campaign in the top flight.

Now fully fit and raring to go the 24 year-old said: “It’s been a frustrating season and it’s the first time I’ve experienced this.

“I scored two goals on the opening day then it went downhill from there.

“I broke my hand against Hamilton then needed an ankle operation.

“I’d rolled it in a reserve game but it wasn’t too bad so I played against Hibs. I stood on Efe Ambrose’s foot and it went again so I was out for a while.

“It’s not been an ideal season and things haven’t gone for me but I’ve learned you just need to keep going. I’m still young and there will be a lot more seasons to make a name for myself.”

Saints host Kilmarnock on Monday and Mullen revealed the Buddies boss has issued a challenge to his players following the 1-0 win over Livingston.

Mullen said: “We’ve hit a run of form now and here’s hoping I can play my part and the manager gives me a chance.

“The next goal the manager gave us is getting back-to-back wins. If we do that we’ll be in a good place. The squad is buzzing after the last few results.

“Hopefully we keep going and make it a right edgy end to the season.

“We’re all in it together and are going to give it one big push. The belief has always been there. We just haven’t always got results.

“Getting five points against Aberdeen, Hearts and Livingston has been good – and it could have been more.

“We dug in against Livi until the death and getting the winner was massive.”
