She surprised again last year, playing an activist in Strangers.
This year, there’s more politics in Channel 4 series Chimerica, about an American photojournalist whose credibility is questioned when he’s accused of faking the Tank Man photograph during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.
She plays Liuli, who died in the massacre. She said: “All I can say is I’m a politically active character who is fighting for justice.”
Politics is close to Katie’s heart. A feminist who went on the London People’s Vote march, she said: “There are things I’m passionate about, like women’s rights. With movements like MeToo and Time’s Up, people now have a voice.
“We need to get involved to save this planet before it goes to s***.”
Her character in Moominvalley is very different. The series is a reboot of the Swedish Moomin books and TV series popular in the 70s and 90s.
The voice cast of Sky’s adaption includes Rosamound Pike with Katie playing Too-Ticky, a blonde character who wears a red-and-white sweater and lives in the bath house.
Katie said: “They offered me the role without me auditioning for it.
“They liked my voice. It’s great they wanted me to use my own accent. It’s very rare that this happens.
“I don’t think this is just for kids. I think everyone will love this show.”
With her career taking off, Katie, who will be back on stage next month in White Pearl at the Royal Court in London, is “really glad” she kept acting.
She added: “I’m having a good stint. I hope there will be more opportunities.” ●Chimerica starts tonight at 9pm on Channel 4. Moominvalley begins on Friday on Sky One and Sky Kids at 5.30pm. like me lap them up, so I’m going to try to introduce a moratorium on my Stacey Dooley bashing for a bit, in solidarity.
She should be celebrated for being at the top of her game and providing inspiration for young girls who are otherwise bombarded with an endless conveyor belt of unhealthy role models.
She shouldn’t be brought down for decisions she’s made in her private life, especially by people who are old enough to know better and would be better advised dealing with their own clumsy attempt at getting through life in one piece (that’s me, by the way) than worrying about the antics of those we don’t know.
Whether this celebrity cheated or not, she wasn’t married, she had no kids and she definitely didn’t kill anyone. So who are we to judge? It’s unforgivable to betray someone you love, but no one knows the ins and outs of relationships behind closed doors.
Besides, the ex involved in this tale is doing everything he can to cling on to his five minutes of fame and dish the dirt, so I’m not sure I blame old Dooley for dumping her man, not that it matters one jot what I think.
But he should have a bit of pride and move on, just like we all should. magdalene. ddaalzlzieiel@l @reraecahcphlpcl.c .com
