VIRGIL AFTER DOUBLE TIME

PORTO v LIVERPOOL

- DAVID MADDOCK

TONIGHT, 8PM, LIVE ON BT SPORT

VIRGIL VAN DIJK has told his Liverpool team-mates: “You have to believe we’ll do the double – otherwise stay at home next time.”

The Dutch colossus arrived in Porto with his pals yesterday, aiming to complete the demolition of the Portuguese after a comfortable 2-0 victory at Anfield in the first leg.

Up for grabs is a second consecutive Champions’ League semi-final but ex-Celtic defender Van Dijk insists his team must target winning the final and also lifting the Premier League trophy.

He said: “For us now it is about belief. And if you think about it, what is eight games, fingers crossed? You have to give everything you have got.

“It is going to be tough, we know that. But it is a great time to be a Liverpool player. We have eight games left, so we have to give it everything we have got... just go for it.”

Liverpool really are in touching distance of the ultimate domestic and European double, a feat they have achieved twice before in their glorious history, in 1977 and 1984.

Those teams were considered the greatest of all time in Anfield legend, and van Dijk is not scared of the challenge of trying to join those greats.

He said: “That’s what we are aiming for. It is still something we need to believe in.

“We are going to believe in ourselves to keep going, to reach the final again, because that is what we are all here for.”

Van Dijk refuses to under-estimate Porto though, and he added: “They will still have the belief, but we want to finish the job.”
