Lomas warns Celts board that interim boss won’t be short of offers if he leads club to treble Treble

he steered the ship after Brendan left for Leicester.

“Then there will be those who say he has basically just achieved it with Brendan’s team, again that’s not the point. He has done the job asked of him, nothing was a forgone conclusion.

“Asking Neil to take the reins was the right call by the Celtic board in that situation. He knew the club as he had been there as a player and manager.”

If another foray into management in England appeals to Lennon then Lomas insists it would be unfair to judge him on his spell at Bolton.

The Hoops boss had a traumatic 17 months in charge of Wanderers but the club’s crippling financial problems made it an almost impossible job.

Lomas said: “It wasn’t that the timing of taking charge at Bolton was wrong, it was just the wrong club. “But Neil discovered when you have average players who are not motivated you have no chance. “I don’t care how good a coach you are, you will always be up against it. “When he was at Bolton for a short spell he had financial issues to deal with which had engulfed the club. “It was a club which hadn’t managed to get promotion after two years and you only have to look at what the financial issues were to see the bigger picture and the problems he was landed with. “There were many mitigating reasons as to why it didn’t work out. “If he had moved to a bigger club in a better financial position I’m sure he would have gone from strength to strength and we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”
