Animal magic at therapy centre

-

VICTORIA Barrett is used to raised eyebrows when introducing her fellow therapists at her counselling service – she uses alpacas! The South American animals help people of all ages deal with trauma, mental health issues, and help boost confidence and self-esteem. Victoria says: “Working alongside the animals offers a different way of exploring difficult and sensitive issues. “It is well documented that holding and stroking animals can reduce blood pressure, lower pulse rates and alleviate tension and anxiety. “The animals offer unconditional acceptance. Many clients feel safer and less threatened around them” Victoria, 55, came up with the idea after working as a paramedic for more than 30 years with West Midlands Ambulance Service. She also worked as a counsellor for 20 years. To relax, she cared for alpacas and llamas at her farm in Worcester. It was when she left the ambulance service that she realised she could combine her skills with her hobby to help others. Clients include children in the care system who come to look after the animals, which in turn builds selfesteem, confidence and morale while reducing anxiety and depression.
