EURO SHOT’S MAIN REASON FOR SIGNING

- BY SCOTT BURNS

CURTIS MAIN admitted getting his first taste of European football played a major part in his decision to join Aberdeen.

The striker has agreed a two-year deal at Pittodrie after his contract came to an end at Motherwell.

Main has played at some big clubs but his first taste of Europa League football will come when the Dons kick off their campaign next month.

The 26-year-old said: “I’ve been waiting for a while to get things done so I’m excited.

“I was also excited by the challenge of playing for Aberdeen and European football is a big draw.

“It’s a big club and I’m looking forward to getting started.

“I’ve enjoyed playing in the league and I’m pleased to move on to such a good club like Aberdeen and hopefully I can bring success to the club.

“It’s a competitive league and the style of football seems to suit me and my personality. I’ve enjoyed it since I came here and rather than move away I’ve decided to stay.”

The Englishman had a big first season at Well but netted just six goals for the Steelmen last season and only half of them were in the league.

Derek McInnes will be hoping he can bring out the Main of two seasons ago where he finished Fir Park’s top scorer and wrecked Dons’ Scottish Cup semi-final hopes with a double in a 3-0 win.

Main said: “The manager didn’t want to bring that up but maybe it played a part in signing me!

“It was a good day for me, not so for Aberdeen, but hopefully now I’m in their colours I can do the same for them.

“I’d love to get my hands on silverware and the club have ambitions to do so. We’ll all be striving for that.

“I felt last season I was more of a leader in the dressing room and was able to help the younger players transition from the youth team to first team.”

There will be one face Main recognises on his first day of pre-season, coach Barry Robson.

The pair played together at Middlesbrough and Robson gave him a glowing reference to boss McInnes.

Main said: “I’m excited to see Barry on the training field, it’ll be interesting to see what he’s like as a coach.”
