Low-flying jet sucked the tiles from our roof

Plane’s vortex blamed for damage to couple’s decking

A COUPLE told of their terror after a plane flew so close to their house that it sucked tiles off the roof.

Agnes and Kevin Rippon say they are now scared to sit in their garden in Clydebank after the jet sent six tiles flying on to their decking on Saturday evening.

The couple say being under one of Glasgow Airport’s busiest flight paths is getting worse.

Agnes, 51, a cleaner, said: “We had just moved from the back garden into the sitting room to watch some TV at around 8pm when we heard a massive bang.

“I went out and saw broken tiles all over the decking. My neighbour saw a plane flying above the house and the tiles hitting the ground.

“With it now being summer, there are more flights than ever. We’re scared it will happen again.”

Community councillor Joe Henry, who lives nearby, said it could be blamed on a “vortex” effect where the turbulence from the plane can cause damage if it is too close to buildings. He said: “It will take a fatality before something changes here.”

Glasgow Airport said incidents of this nature are extremely rare and it took such complaints extremely seriously.

Bosses are arranging for a surveyor to assess the damage and determine the cause. The airport added that aircraft followed routes authorised by the Civil Aviation Authority.

A spokesman added: “Aircraft, when on final approach into Glasgow Airport, do not and cannot deviate from these routes which have been designed in accordance with strict safety and environmental criteria.”
