Tribute to Celt heroes of WWI
A HAUNTING silent tribute to fallen Celtic players and fans, who fought in the killing fields of World War I, has appeared at Parkhead.
Charity Ancre Somme Association Scotland made the poignant gesture with the There But Not There figure of a soldier.
The association aims to teach children and communities about their military heritage.
They said: “Our There But Not There Tommy visited Celtic FC to remember their players and supporters who risked their lives during World War I – men like William Angus VC who received his medal from King George V on August 30, 1915.”
Lance Corporal Angus voluntarily braved 70 yards of German fire to reach an injured officer and bring him back.
He suffered up to 40 wounds and lost his left eye.
An association spokesman said: “When the King commented on his 40 injuries, Angus was said to have answered ‘Aye, si r, but only 13 were serious’.”
