Green anger over plans to drill for oil
BY KATRINE BUSSEY GREEN campaigners have condemned a move to open up new areas of the North Sea for oil drilling.
The Oil and Gas Authority, an arm of the Westminster Government, has made 768 new blocks or part-blocks of the seabed available for oil and gas exploration.
It argues that Britain will need fossil fuels “for the foreseeable future”, even though Theresa May has vowed that the UK will reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Lang Banks, of charity WWF Scotland, said: “The science is clear. To reduce the risk of dangerous global climate change, the vast majority of known fossil fuel reserves need to be left in the ground.”
