Choke death nursery staff ‘will be given counselling’
Workers in shock after tragic death
INVESTIGATIONS were continuing yesterday into the death of a 10-month-old baby who died after choking on a piece of mango at a private nursery.
The tragic youngster was named as Fox Goulding, who lived in the Corstorphine area of Edinburgh with his parents, Ian and Fiona, and big sister Bonnie.
Fox was rushed to hospital following the incident at Bright Horizons nursery in Edinburgh on Tuesday. The tot passed away on Wednesday, according to police.
It’s understood staff noticed Fox slumped over and thought he was sleeping. When they tried to rouse him, they discovered his lips were blue and he was not responding.
A source at the nursery said: “At the moment, it’s unclear whether anyone actually saw him choke but he was thought to have been sleeping at first. Staff are distraught and some will need counselling to help them through this.
“There will be a thorough investigation from all the relevant bodies, including the police, but questions must be asked if this baby was eating unsupervised.”
One shocked mum – who asked not to be named – said parents were contacted to collect their children and were told the nursery would remain closed until further notice.
She said: “Everyone is devastated. It’s horrendous.
“He was a lovely wee baby and had a big sister, too. I feel for the parents.
“It’s terrifying when something like this happens as so many people put their trust in others to look after their children.”
A police spokeswoman said: “The death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
The nursery said: “We are co-operating fully with the authorities. The safety and wellbeing of the children in our care is our absolute priority. The nursery will be closed while wesupportstaffandfamilies.”
