Ferguson backs Pittodrie men to win return clash

on a bit of a downer because their heroes only have a one-goal lead to take to Lapland. Ferguson said: “We should have been walking off to the crowd cheering us if we had just been a bit more clinical. “I thought we created enough to be four or five up but it’s just so disappointing. That’s the fine margins of playing in Europe. “We were ready, I thought we were really sharp. It was just the finishing chance. “Sam Cosgrove had a few chances and their keeper was outstanding. On another day we would probably be coming in four or five-nil but a slack bit of defending has cost us a goal.

“I thought the keeper was outstanding. He pulled off some excellent saves in both halves. We were comfortable in the game and we’re confident going over there.

“We shouldn’t be too down. We will come back into training and recover and we go over there one goal up, although we lost a goal here. We’re still winning the tie so I’m pretty confident in us going over and getting a result.”

McInnes had made major changes to his Aberdeen squad this summer and Ferguson believes the team and the majority of the new boys have hit the ground running.

Craig Bryson and Greg Leigh both missed the game with injury but Ryan Hedges and Jon Gallagher were handed their debuts.

Gallagher, on loan from Atlanta, set up the second and walked away with the man of the match award. Ferguson said: “He’s been really good.

“It can take a bit of time for boys coming from different countries to get used to the intensity of the game but Gal’s fitted right in and he’s got that energy about his game.”
