OAP victim is hit by quad bike on pavement
FOUR people died across Scotland in a bloody weekend on the roads.
A 75-year-old woman was hit and killed by a quad bike while walking on the pavement in Glasgow.
The victim, named locally as Margaret Meldrum, was yards from her home in Knightswood when she was struck by the red Honda at about 3.10pm on Saturday and died at the scene. She leaves a husband, Billy.
A neighbour said: “You couldn’t meet a nicer person than Margaret. It’s really sad.
“If it was a weekday, it could easily have been children as it happened right outside the childminder’s.”
A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. Flowers were left at the scene. Police appealed for witnesses.
Also on Saturday, two pedestrians died after being hit by a car on the A911 Leslie Road in Glenrothes, Fife.
A woman, 59, and a 61-year-old man were struck by a grey Ford Fiesta travelling northwest and died at the scene. The 20-year-old driver suffered minor injuries. Police were investigating.
On Friday, a 35-year-old woman died after a two-vehicle crash in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.
Yvonne Lumsden, from New Deer, was driving a white Volkswagen Polo which was in collision with a white Mitsubishi L200 towing a twin-axle trailer.
A man, 33, and two children aged six and four were taken to hospital with minor injuries. They were believed to be the victim’s husband and daughters.
In Peebles on Saturday evening, a 36-year-old woman was seriously hurt when the BMW she was a passenger in was in collision with a police car.
And in Glasgow’s Gorbals, two men, 25 and 28, and a woman, 63, were struck in a hit-and-run incident at about midnight on Friday after leaving a pub where there had been a fight.
All three were hospitalised. Police were treating it as attempted murder.
