Last season he was in the same situation I am in now. “He’s a top player and a great defender and someone I can learn from alongside Connor and Filip. He spoke to me and some of the staff have spoken about it too, how Niko was in and out but he kept going. “They’ve told me to do the same, keep the head up and try to stay in the team when I get my chance. It is hard coming from Oldham and having played every game but I knew it was going to be like this so I’m not going to get down. “I’ll take every day as it comes and enjoy it. The manager is always pulling you to the side and telling you what you are doing well and what you could do better. He’s always on you. “I saw Connor and Niko did well towards the end of last season so it was only right they should keep their place. “The other centre-halves will be wanting to play every game. It’s up to the gaffer. I knew

“If there’s something he sees in me he will do the same. Connor’s the same, he’s always pulling me to the side as a senior figure.

“He’ll take Niko and I over to do drills on defending crosses. It’s healthy competition. We’re not out to get each other. If they have the shirt I support them and if I have it they’d support me.”

Edmundson is hoping to impress Gerrard but revealed how the Gers gaffer’s cousin Anthony was a huge help to him Boundary Park.

And while the 22-year-old is loving life under the England icon he also learned under another Three Lions legend when Paul Scholes was in charge of his boyhood heroes.

He said: “It was good playing under Paul Scholes at Oldham. The way he and the gaffer coach is similar and the way they come across is similar too.

“It’s been two good experiences that I’m thankful to have. What did I take from my time under Scholes? It improved me technically.

“His sessions were more tactical and technical whereas past managers were about running and getting stuck in.

“I only worked under him a short spell of time but I improved under him and I’ve improved since joining Rangers. There’s still more to come.

“At Oldham the centre-half was Anthony Gerrard, a lively character and very vocal.

“But he was very good to me and I have learned a lot from him.

“He’s the gaffer’s cousin and he still texts me all the time. The gaffer doesnt touch on it too much but they will have spoken about it. Peter Clarke was similar to Gerrard in that he is another established Championship and League One player.

“I can’t describe how much I learned from him, especially in my last season. Just little things about being a defender. I wouldn’t be here without those two.”

Edmundson admitted he wasn’t in need of much rest during the break.

He said: “The lads who have played more than me probably feel they needed a break but they all looked sharp in training so I’m sure it’s done us good.

“The international break was good. I got some time away and it was nice. I went down the road then I went for some sun to try and get a tan.

“But we had an off-season programme to follow as well so I still had to go and do some running. “The sports science guys give us a programme to cater to our needs. You get tested daily at Rangers so everyone is fit and ready to go.”
