£1m boost to buoy up Waverley fund
THE SCOTTISH Government has pledged £1million to help repair a historic paddle steamer.
Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop yesterday announced the funding for the 70-year-old Waverley, said to be the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world.
The boat, which embarked on her maiden voyage in 1947, has been BY CRAIG PATON out of commission due to a number of problems including the need for two new boilers.
The main electrical switchboard is also in need of replacement.
A fundraising drive was launched in June with a target set of £2.3million.
The new funding takes the effort to £1.9million of this total.
