Lewis stays cool despite sauna strife in Singapore

-

LEWIS HAMILTON looks set to slug it out with Max Verstappen in Singapore after surviving a “sauna” to take the plaudits in practice.

The Mercedes man edged the Red Bull racer, who had led the opening run, in the floodlit night-time session.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel – chasing his first win for more than a year – was third on the timesheets, with Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas behind him after an earlier crash.

Hamilton said: “It has been a good day. It’s so hot out there. It’s always a shock to the system when you get in the car here because it’s very bumpy, it’s a long, long lap and like a sauna in the car.

“I felt much better in the car than I have for a while.” CRICKET: Scotland suffered final-ball misery in their Twenty20 tri-series winnertakes-all clash, losing to Ireland by a single run.

With a 187 target to chase at Malahide, Matthew Cross looked capable of scoring the 15 runs required off the last over – especially when he hoisted a Shane Getkate delivery over the rope.

But he was left stranded on 66 not out as Craig Wallace, needing a boundary off the last delivery in Dublin, was run out.

The result saw Scotland finish second to the Irish with Holland bottom. BASKETBALL: Glasgow Rocks beat Manchester Giants 96-80 to get the British season off to a flier.

Ali Fraser and Greg Pryor hit a game-high 24 points apiece in the BBL Cup. SPEEDWAY: Glasgow Tigers last night celebrated winning the coveted SGB Championship Pairs title.

Craig Cook and Rasmus Jensen dominated the event in Somerset, topping the qualifying before going on to beat Leicester Lions in the Grand Final.
