POCH: I NEED MORE HEROES
MAURICIO POCHETTINO has challenged his Spurs squad to prove they are better than last year.
Last term they reached the Champions League Final and finished fourth in the Premier League.
But in five years under the Argentine they’ve yet to win any silverware and Pochettino has admitted BY TONY BANKS this squad may not be as good as last year’s heroes.
Spurs opened this term’s Champions league campaign by throwing away a two-goal lead at Olympiakos to only draw 2-2 on Wednesday.
And ahead of today’s trip to Leicester, Pochettino said: “At the moment I don’t believe this is the best squad.
“If you only see the results, playing in the final of the Champions League, it’s easy to say the better squad was last season’s.
“We will see at the end of the season. If we can repeat that feat or if we win a trophy, maybe then we can talk about this being the best squad we’ve had.”
There has been constant speculation over Christian Erikesen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, whose contracts run out at the end of this season.
Pochettino added: “Every player needs to be ready to play now – and need to show their quality.” don’t think there is any doubt his record shows he is up there alongside Harry.
“I wouldn’t say he is any better than Jamie. They’re different types and different qualities.
“It is your preference. I like a striker who can really penetrate in behind and has that speed to get away and also score goals.
“At this level in the most competitive league in the world, he is up with the very elite strikers.
“I am very fortunate to have him here.”
