I washed blood-soaked overalls for a living

Death in Paradise star Kris is back on our screens in the period drama Sanditon. We chatted to him about his favourite comedy shows and the worst jobs he’s ever had...

- What do you like to watch on TV? Kris Marshall Do you have any guilty pleasures? What’s the weirdest fan mail you’vehad? How long did this particular fan mail go on for? What are the worst jobs you’ve ever had? I loved working on the till at Iceland… unti

I love a documentary – I watched the climbing film Free Solo recently. I’m a massive fan of those sorts of things. Anything with a risk that people might die if they fall basically. What shows do you like to binge-watch? It’s my son binge-watching Transformers: Rescue Bots. I binged Breaking Bad when my wife was pregnant with our daughter. She’s three now, so it’s been a while. Sports I can go to town on, though, and watch for hours. Where is your TV? We have a big one in the lounge but we also have one in the kitchen where I’ll watch the news while cooking for the kids. They always moan when I have ‘Daddy’s telly’ on. Do you have any retro favourites? I love Curb Your Enthusiasm. It’s exactly my sense of humour. I’m concerned that we live in a world nowadays where we’re so worried about offending other people. I don’t wish people to be offensive but I really can’t stand virtue signalling. Yes, I love ABBA and The Pointer Sisters. I kind of live in the Eighties. I don’t use social media, I’m playing (Eighties computer game) Manic Miner. The world really has left me behind. I used to get a lot from one person who was trying to indoctrinate me into their church. I laughed it off then weeks later I received another letter saying, ‘Let me put you on the right path...’ Years. I also got sent a weird trinket alongside a strange bookmark with something written on it in Japanese. I should have had it translated. It was probably, ‘I can save you’. I once worked at an industrial laundrette where I stuffed overalls from abattoirs into industrial drums. I only lasted a day. But I also had a few good jobs over the years, like the one manning a coconut shy at a funfair. I even enjoyed working on the till at supermarket Iceland but they sacked me for wearing sunglasses. l Kris stars in period drama Sanditon, on Sunday, STV, at 9pm.
