SAINTS WILL BE SINNERS NOW

- BY GORDON PARKS

PAUL McGINN insists St Mirren have no intention of suffering another hard luck story against Hamilton.

The full-back believes three defeats on the bounce have been a tale of what might have been and that lacking a clinical edge has cost them.

McGinn admits this afternoon’s home clash with Accies is a chance to right a few wrongs by showing a nastier streak and stronger mentality.

He said: “At times we have been too nice in games and it has cost us. We need to look at that.

“The last two games against Livingston and Ross County were frustrating and they are matches we should never have lost.

“We were sloppy and we have to make sure we don’t keep talking about hard luck stories.

“We have to be more ruthless. With a minute to go in Dingwall, we should have seen it out for the point. But we lost a bad goal and came away with nothing.

“We want to build some momentum. If you start losing games then you can go into a rut and we don’t want that. When you win though it keeps the positivity of the place and we want to do that.”

McGinn has also urged Saints to take a leaf out of boss Jim Goodwin’s book from his playing days by getting the job done by whatever means.

They failed to halt an injury-time County breakaway which led to their winner last weekend.

And McGinn said: “When the gaffer was playing he would have fouled the boy on the halfway line.

“Young midfielders let the boy get past them and then the other team score. It comes with experience.

“You see the likes of Ryan Christie making cynical fouls. It isn’t something you associate with his game but he does it to help the team.

“Sometimes you have to take the booking for the boys. You would rather be on a booking than be a goal down.”
