3 Best wines from the High Street

2018 Tesco Fiano £5.75 a Tesco

A bit like buses, no sooner do I recommend one fiano (as I did last week) than another sound option comes along. Marvel again at the variety’s gentle, delicate, light texture supporting, here, ripe apple and mandarin fruit with fresh pink grapefruit acidity, sweeter spices and attractive floral touches.

2018 Kleine Kapelle Pinot Grigio £6 at the Co-op

Although Italy is of course the capital of Pinot Grigio land, Germany’s PG acreage is substantial – actually, the world’s third biggest. That country’s more northerly latitude means grapes grown there ripen more slowly and retain more of the enlivening acidity that examples from hotter climates often lack. This easy drinking, cheerful German version is especially appealing combining soft orange, ripe melon and peach fruit with that important acidic liveliness.
