CHANCE OF A LIFETIME

Ramsay’s back thanks to Sergio

-

RICHIE RAMSAY says he’ll be forever in Sergio Garcia’s debt after coming sixth at Wentworth’s BMW PGA Championship.

The Edinburgh golfer posted his career-best finish to book a place in this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.

Ramsay overcame a thirdhole bogey to grab four birdies in a three-under 69 for a 13-under total, seven behind winner Danny Willett.

He was only first reserve for this weekend’s event but was handed his chance after Garcia elected to take a week off following his win in last week’s KLM Open.

Ramsay now moves up into BY DALE RANKIN joint third on the 2020 European Ryder Cup points table having bagged £200,000 at Wentworth and also jumps from 91st to 62nd on the Race to Dubai.

He said: “I owe Sergio more than a few drinks after this week’s result and I’m now exempt into the Dunhill Links.

“My caddie was looking at the board and saying we’ve got a bit of a gap but it was nice to make it anyway.

“I’ve got myself into the Dunhill while my Tour card for next year is now sorted and my goal now to get into the top 30 for the DP World last event.

“This week has proved I can mix it with the best. If you look at the field, it is probably the strongest we’ve had. I love the course and love coming here.”

Bob McIntyre was next best of the Scots posting a 73 to drop back to just inside the top 30 at four under.

Willett admitted it was like the end of a nightmare after shooting 67 to win by three from Spaniard Jon Rahm.

His career had nosedived since winning the Masters three years ago but said: “This has been a fairytale week.”
