Joy for Stew as Rabs off mark

- SCOTT McHARG

STEWART MAXWELL hailed his Rabs for showing character after they picked up their first points of the season in a 1-0 win away to Rossvale.

At the ninth time of asking Rob Roy finally got on the points sheet thanks to sub Jay McInally’s 75th-minute winner.

Maxwell, whose side are now a point behind secondbottom Vale, said: “It’s a great feeling to eventually get off the board in a game we deserved to win.

“We haven’t been getting any breaks at all and credit to the lads for sticking with it and giving me everything. They got their just rewards.”

It was a game of very little chances between the two bottom teams although Rabs did have the ball in the net twice in the first half only for Sam McKenzie to be penalised for handball before Ewan McPherson had a header ruled out for a very tight offside call.

The breakthrough arrived with 15 minutes remaining when McInally volleyed in a special strike from fellow sub Jordan Currie-McLean’s cross much to the delight of the Rob Roy players, officials and fans.

Rossvale gaffer David Gormley, in his first game in charge, said: “A draw would have been a fair result but it wasn’t to be.

“I have literally just met the boys for the first time so I’m looking forward to getting a full week under our belt and getting to know everyone properly before we head to Cumnock away in the Scottish Cup.

“What this club have achieved in the past few years is nothing short of extraordinary and I’m honoured and privileged to be a part of the next chapter in the club’s short history.”

Meanwhile, Jon Scullion hit the winner as Kilbirnie saw off Glenafton 1-0.

James Finlay quickly played a corner to Peter McGill who found Scullion and he scampered into the box to fire into the net with the keeper David Wilson getting a hand to it as it sailed in.
